Item Description
This comical scene captures the essence of a couple of old drinking buddies, its name in Spanish. Made by Great Master of Mexican Folk Art Alfonso Castillo Orta (1944-2009) in 1999, it measures 3.25"x5.5". The paint is well done in subtle rather than overly bright colors, and the detailed decoration is what the Castillo family is famous for.
Item Special Note
In Izucar de Matamoros, Puebla, Mexico, three Castillo brothers (Alfonso, Heriberto, and Agustin) and their extended families live next to each other and produced some of the most intricately painted folk art in Mexico. They have become famous for their hand modeled, whimsical pieces which are made from local clay, with firing done in a wood kiln. After firing, they are coated in white paint that serves as the background then decorative elements are added with tempura paints using natural pigments such as indigo for blue and cochineal for red. Their museum quality workmanship is sought by collectors all over the world. Unfortunately with the death of Alfonso in 2009, the family lost its mentor, but his wife and five children carry on the tradition.
