Item Description
Monotype 2
4" x 24" x 1"
Richard Harrington, a Rhode Island native, earned a BS degree in Industrial Arts Education and an M.Ed in Special Education from Rhode Island College. He is an award-winning artist and a juried member of several local and regional art organizations. A skilled teacher, he offers instruction and workshops in watercolor, acrylic and monotype painting. As a believer in lifelong learning, he continues to participate in numerous drawing and painting classes, including workshops with nationally known instructors. His paintings cover a wide range of subjects: landscapes, flowers, architecture and still lives. He paints what he sees, at times improvising on the subject matter or inventing elements to enhance the image. Using strong composition and saturated color, his paintings range from realistic to abstract to capture the mood, weather, light, time of day, season or atmosphere. His most recent abstract series considers the use of compartments and connections as a metaphor for life.
The exploration of the landscape through the printed image (monotype, a single print on paper) has enabled Richard to experiment with colors, values, light, design and the language of mark making. Using the images of marshes and shoreline of the area, he has tried to capture the mood, atmosphere, weather, and/or the time of day. Rather than depicting an actual place, “Seaside Serenade” is part of a series of monotypes that attempts to convey the emotion and sense of place and mood.
