Item Description

Acrylic

30" x 30" x 1"

Irene Allen has formal education in biology, with degrees from Middlebury College and Johns Hopkins. She has studied at RISD and exhibited drawings, silkscreen prints and paintings throughout New England. Allen has won numerous awards from group shows at the AAM, the Spring Bull Gallery in Newport, RI the East Greenwich Library and the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative.  She is a member of the Art League of RI and a founding member of the Ceruleans, a group of women artists who meet monthly for critique and mount yearly exhibits together.

This painting is a study of begonia leaves. Allen has always been interested in the shapes of leaves and particularly in the pattern of their veins. But beyond that, the artist likes to show how leaves relate to each other as they seem to challenge each other for space and light.  Allen used exaggerated color to dramatize their individual differences.
