Item Description
This Silver with Amethyst "Middle Way" Jizo comes from designer Valerie Johns of Jizo & Chibi
Jizo is the bodhisattva, awakened teacher, best known for his promise to the Buddha to remain on earth until everyone was finished suffering. His Sanskrit name, Ksitigarbha, translates to Earth Womb, so in a way, he is Mother Earth. Ms. Johns designed him to help people feel centered, compassionate and mindful. This amethyst Jizo is meant to ease the wearer's experience of addictions and cravings. He stands three-quarters of an inch tall and is rounded and soothing to the touch.
When creator Valerie Johns first saw a representation of the Jizo Bodhisattva she asked herself, "Who does this image represent? There were dozens of old stone figures scattered along the roadside...round-faced figures wearing bright red bibs." She was captivated.
The answer came while visiting a Hiroshima garden. The statue was Jizo Bodhisattava, the protector of all people, it was explained, but regarded by most as the protector of children in particular. The story went back 2,500 years to the time when Jizo promised Buddha he would remain on earth until every soul was finished suffering. Jizo is revered throughout Asia as the guardian of women, children, and travellers.
The "Chibi" of Jizo and Chibi manifested in a painting Valerie created early in her career as a psychotherapist. The childlike image was a natural extension of the Buddhist principles she'd integrated into counseling and provided her with a personal outlet to process the traumatic experiences shared by her patients. She now offers this outlet to all.
