Artists Statement:
I think it’s interesting how everything on earth including our biology comes from elements from the stars, including us as organisms and the microorganisms that make us up. My work is largely biomorphic and focused on the aggregation of marks, textures, and repeating forms. From microbiology to the macrocosm, I reference how separate complex wells of life are visually intertwined through aggregation.
My sculptures started as natural mimicry with the contrast of busy textural elements against the muted colors of the Cubist color palette. These more recent pieces reflect natural growth uninhibited. They reference the Abstract Expressionist process of treating the pictorial surface as a reference to the work itself coming into being. Like my sculptures, the drawings and ink portraits represent a sort of primordial soup. The works are repeating marks coalescing as found in nature - simultaneously referencing ocean, landscapes, microbiology, nebulas in space and light movement, and suggesting a visual unity to all matter as simple repetitious blocks of growth in gravity-affected space.
