Item Description
A shallow lipped bowl, approximately 11" in diameter x 2-1/4" deep. It is painted in ox-blood red with cobalt blue as an accent, trimmed in 24K gold leaf on the famous white porcelain of the Imari prefecture. The design has the classic chrysanthemums, peonies, and Japanese female dancers holding fans.
Imari porcelain was originated in the year 1616 in the town of Arita, Japan. It became famous for its pure white color, to which colorful designs were added by the artist Sakaida Kakiemon starting in 1643. The “Imari” name comes from the port city to which the pieces were shipped for trading.
