Betty Harrington began her journey as an artist in 1961 in CA. She moved to RI and while raising a family and working full-time, she also took drawing and painting courses at RISD. Harrington graduated from Brown University in 1992. She is a founding member of Imago Gallery in Warren, RI, has recently become an Elected Artist at the Mystic Museum of Art in CT, and was one of the artists featured in the AAM’s 8 Visions show during Aug, 2017. In addition to painting, Harrington has expanded her artwork into photography, assemblage, and mixed media.
The INFIGO Series is inspired by marks and signs left behind in caves by our Paleolithic ancestors. One of the marks left behind on the walls of Lascaux was an elaborate grid filled in with black and ochre smudges and the abstract nature of the grid stirred Harrington’s curiosity. In this body of work, she explored textures and colors closely associated with the atmosphere of the original cave paintings while making the artwork her own vision. The “Grid with Gold” is a bit more formal than a lot of the other works and using gold leaf to enhance some of the signs is a major departure from the prehistoric works. Many of the signs and symbols found in the European caves are familiar to us and have moved with humankind throughout time, such as the “triangle” which usually represents females. Female imagery is a reminder that women have been “…at the heart of art for more than 25,000 years.”
