Item Description
Oil on metal
24.5" x 24.5" x 1"
Betty Harrington began her journey as an artist in 1961 in CA. She moved to RI and while raising a family and working full-time, she also took drawing and painting courses at RISD. Harrington graduated from Brown University in 1992. She is a founding member of Imago Gallery in Warren, RI, has recently become an Elected Artist at the Mystic Museum of Art in CT, and was one of the artists featured in the AAM’s 8 Visions show during Aug, 2017. In addition to painting, Harrington has expanded her artwork into photography, assemblage, and mixed media.
In “Sea Bouquet,” the artist explored using oil paints to work on a flat, smooth, metal surface. Moving the paint around this type of surface lent itself to a making short brushstrokes. Using blues and greens, an image slowly emerged that suggested underwater foliage, perhaps a kind of seaweed. Harrington worked layer upon layer of small strokes to maintain the color vibrancy and to keep the artwork more abstract than defined. There are some places on the surface where a bit of the shiny metal emerges and those areas have not been covered with paint because those bits of shine enhanced the overall painting.
