Item Description
Acrylic painting of "Sunflowers and Pear"
Created by local Cooperstown resident Jim Bourdon in 1992.
Bourdon worked as an art director for advertising firms in New York City before retiring and moving to Cooperstown with his wife in the 1970s. There, he learned ironworking, and took up a position as a blacksmith at The Farmers' Museum.
Painting measures 14.25" x 16.75"
One vase is a "Fruits of Life" vase made of ivory china by Lenox.
Lenox was founded in 1889 by Walter Scott Lenox as Lenox's Ceramic Art Company, Trenton, New Jersey. Lenox's products became popular in the early 20th century when separate dining rooms and hostess parties became the new trend. With the increase in popularity, the company began producing a wider range of ceramic items, including vases like the "Fruits of Life" design, produced towards the end of the 20th century.
The second vase has motifs of wheat, the mani en fede symbol, and celtic knots. It was made by the Irish pottery, Belleek.
Belleek Pottery Ltd is a porcelain company that began trading in 1884 in Belleek, County Fermanagh (now Northern Ireland). Irish symbolism, such as the mani in fede (hands joined in faith) design often seen on Claddagh rings, is very common in Belleek pieces.
