Item Description

“Head Over Heels” & “First Light” Framed Paintings by Helen Shulman

Abstract painter Helen Shulman (born 1941) grew up in Amish, a small town in Ohio. His dad was a chemist who commuted from Cleveland. Her mother was her second grade teacher, she taught in the local four-room school. His brother was considered the smart one. So she ended up getting a Masters in Mathematics in an attempt to prove to her family, especially her dad that girls could think. Helen recalls her childhood with a lot of nostalgia – it was a happy one, though isolated, but happy. They were so different from the Amish and the farmers. They had few friends. Helen used to visit the Art Museum in Cleveland when she was very young. Her parents believed that all art worth doing had been done before 1900. They also thought that a woman should be able to earn her own living but believed being an artist wasn’t a sensible occupation, but it was okay for a girl to paint figurines and arrange flowers. It really never occurred to her to take a chance on becoming a professional artist until after she had already had a long career as a psychotherapist. Today, her artistic philosophy is related to her experience as a psychotherapist. Helen has exhibited her art at the Eastern Seaboard and throughout New England. Her art has been featured in Still Point Arts Quarterly, Brunswick, ME and Art New England Magazine. Framed Helen Shulman art is also included in numerous public and private collections including the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and many others.
