Christopher O’Riley - Saturday, December 2nd - 8:00pm
Acclaimed for his engaging and deeply committed performances, the pianist Christopher O’Riley is known to millions as the host of NPR’s “From the Top.” Now in his seventeenth year on-air with From the Top, O’Riley introduces the next generation of classical-music stars to almost a million listeners each week, broadcast by 250 stations across the United States. As an acclaimed soloist and recitalist, his repertoire spans a kaleidoscopic array of music from the pre-baroque to present-day.
In this unique program that will be announced from the stage, Christopher will perform wide-ranging repertoire from classical sonatas to his own arrangements of songs by bands such as Radiohead and the Smiths.
Edward Arron and Jeewon Park - Sunday, April 8th - 4:00 pm
The Emelin welcomes cellist Edward Arron and pianist Jeewon Park; world-renowned musicians, co-artistic directors at the Clark Institute in MA, husband and wife. The critically-acclaimed couple bring their passion, inventiveness and dazzling technique together to perform a rich and varied program from a set of variations by Beethoven’ on Mozart´s aria, “The Magic Flute,” to “Le Grand Tango,” a single-movement piece by Astor Piazzolla that melds traditional tango rhythms with jazz-inspired syncopation. The afternoon also features the subtle harmonies, shimmering piano textures, and often folk-like melodies of Enrique Granados’ poetic Two Tonadillas, and two sonatas, the first by Beethoven who pioneered the form in a quest to create a fluid, “total sonata” that was more than a sum of its movements, and the second by César Franck, considered one of the finest sonatas for violin ever written and which will be performed on cello and piano.
Brentano String Quartet - Sunday, May 20th - 4:00pm
Since its inception in 1992, the Brentano String Quartet has appeared throughout the world to popular and critical acclaim. “Passionate, uninhibited and spellbinding,” raves the London Independent; The New York Times extols its “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism”; the Philadelphia Inquirer praises its “seemingly infallible instincts for finding the center of gravity in every phrase and musical gesture”; and the Times (London) opines, “the Brentanos are a magnificent string quartet…This was wonderful, selfless music-making.” Within a few years of its formation, the Quartet garnered the first Cleveland Quartet Award and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award; and in 1996 the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center invited them to be the inaugural members of Chamber Music Society Two, a program which was to become a coveted distinction for chamber groups and individuals. The Quartet had its first European tour in 1997, and was honored in the U.K. with the Royal Philharmonic Award for Most Outstanding Debut. That debut recital was at London’s Wigmore Hall, and the Quartet has continued its warm relationship with Wigmore, appearing there regularly and serving as the hall’s Quartet-in-Residence in the 2000-01 season.
The Quartet is named for Antonie Brentano, whom many scholars consider to be Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved”, the intended recipient of his famous love confession.
