After 16 years of planning, planting and building, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens opened in 2007. Today, it is a jewel of rare quality among North American gardens. It features 250 acres of manicured gardens, spectucular stonework, waterfalls and ponds, and an overall design that’s both appealing and impressive. These elements blend seamlessly with the natural landscape, including nearly a mile of sparkling waterfront; massive ledges covered in mosses, lichens, and ferns; and native forest – in fact, the essence of Maine.
William Cullina is an authority on native plants, who has written five acclaimed horticultural reference books and co-authored Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens: A People’s Garden in 2011. He is the recipient of the Scott Medal for lifetime achievement in horticulture, the George Robert White Medal for “advancing horticulture in the broadest sense,” and the Award of Excellence for advancing the goals of the National Garden Clubs of America.
