Item Description
Is your son or daughter intrigued by the inner workings of state and local government or considering a career in education, government affairs, legislative work or generally in public service? Granby state and local public servants have joined together to offer one student a behind the scenes glimpse of the inner workings of state and local government.
The experience starts with Superintendent Addley accompanying the student to the gold-domed Victorian gothic building in Hartford that is home to the Connecticut State Capitol. The Capitol houses government offices including the legislative chambers and the Governor’s office.
Senator Witkos, Senator Kissel and Representative Simanski will personally guide the student on a behind the scenes tour of the General Assembly including the legislative chambers. The student will walk through the "House Lobby" where staff and lobbyists meet with legislators as they enter and the leave the legislative chambers. GMHS Students involved with the Granby Debate Club, the CT Youth Forum or the Model UN Club may be particularly intrigued to watch legislative debate, if underway during the visit. This behind the scenes tour will include the Legislative Office Building (LOB) where hearing rooms and legislative committee offices are located. While in session, there are endless possibilities as to who you may meet, especially in the company of these state and local leaders, perhaps even the Commissioner of Education, if the timing works out!
After lunch at the Legislative Office Building, the student will return to Granby to serve as an Honorary Member of the Board of Education for the evening. In the company of Dr. Addley, the student will present the highlights of this civic "priceless experience" to the members of the Board of Education and the public audience taped live and broadcasted on Granby Community Television, Cox, Channel 16.
