The Designer
“I have always loved clothes. My mother taught me the value of quality over quantity at a young age. When I put on a piece of clothing, I want to love it. I want it to FEEL good. I want to think it is beautiful and practical all at once. I want to feel comfort and happiness in everything I wear. I want the mind body spirit connection in the clothing I wear and the clothing I create. I want women and girls to put on a Vivienne Walker piece and feel beautiful and good.” – Meg Jacobs
The Process
“The process usually begins when I am running and listening to music. I’ll have a vision of a dress. The shape and the feel of it. I’ll think about the details and how I want it to wear. Then I will meet with Mendy (the head seamstress) several times. We will go through countless samples until my initial dream becomes a reality. Then she will in turn make a pattern – which will become several sizes. Somewhere, in this process, I will go to Kate’s (the artist) studio. I will look through all her current and past work. I love all her work. I’ll pick a few paintings. We will discuss possible patterns and colors. Kate then transforms her painting into a textile pattern. It’s truly amazing. Both she and Mendy are wizards of their crafts. The finalized pattern will go to North Carolina and be printed by advanced digital textiles onto 100% cotton fabric. Then Mendy and a small team of seamstresses will hand cut and hand sew the yards and yards of fabric into individual pieces. It’s really neat.” – Meg Jacobs
The Artist
Kate Roebuck is an artist, living and working in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Largely influenced by her background in textile design, artist Kate Roebuck finds inspiration in form, pattern, color, and texture. Exploring these classical themes, she seeks to create open-ended visual dialogue and to shed light on the ever-evolving relationship of the creator and the created. Drawing from nature and everyday life, Kate’s work is both bold and quirky, an interpretation undoubtedly all her own. Her world is best described as witty, unconventional, and rhythmic, chasing the elusive balance of playfulness and precision. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she has lived in the South for nearly a decade. The slower pace of life in the South leaves her with ample time to create.
The Cloth
100% preshrunk cotton fabric, printed with original design in North Carolina, carefully hand sewn in Tennessee.
