Item Description
Limited Edition Audubon print from the Birds of America series by Master Lithographer M. Bernard Loates. Arguably the best North American printmaker of our era, he is renowned for his high quality Audubon lithographs.
The Loates Birds of America series are the only modern Audubon edition to be created from the original Audubon water colors. Loates was granted permission by the New York Historical Society to work directly from the original water colors. He removed all of the color from the images he made from the originals and then, with the aid of master colorists, carefully added back the color to achieve as close as possible a representation of how the original water colors would looked on the day that Audubon finished them.
In Audubon Art Prints, Bill Steiner says, "Over ninety colors of ink and paint were used... Loates prepared a new etched steel plate for each image, and the quality far surpasses that of all other modern... [Audubon] prints. The boxed sets [of 29 prints] sold for $6,000 when they were first issued in 1987."
Condition: As Issued Fine Condition. The print has been stored in a temperature and humidity controlled environment. (Household conditions since 2008.)
Paper: High quality extra heavy weight paper that is blank on the back. There is a nicely defined plate mark around the image.
Signature: Pencil signed by Loates in the lower right corner. There are embossed chop marks next to the signature.
Number: Hand numbered in the lower left corner, 713/1000. There are embossed chop marks next to the number. (Including initials JJA for John James Audubon.)
Size: Double Elephant Folio sized at 26.5" x 39.5". Image area is approx. 22.25" x 36.25".
