Mely Barragan (b. 1975) born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, is fully bilingual, and is as comfortable with the minutiae of Mexican culture as she is with that of the U.S. She works in collage and soft sculpture and has shown her work in museums and galleries throughout Mexico and the United States. She has also had exhibitions and a residency in China. In fact, for two years starting in 2011, she ran an exhibition space in Bejing named, TJ in China, where she showed a mix of international and Chinese artists. She currently operates a gallery under the same name in Tijuana. The goal, says Barragán and her partner Ruanova, has been to create a place of exchange — where Tijuana artists can meet the world and vice versa.
