Item Description
This scroll from Oriental Outpost depicts a "Big Belly Happy Buddha." The actual title in Chinese is "Chang Le Tu", which literally means "Big/Long Laugh Painting".
The characters written on the scroll go on to suggest that a big belly can tolerate all intolerable things in the world. And a second line suggests that a smiling face is best used to make all the good people in the world to laugh with you.
The painting contains a great deal of detail. It is mounted to a silk wall scroll. The artist takes almost a full day to complete it. His name is Jing Bin. He was born in Guanxi Province (southern China). His specialty is paintings of mythological and historical figures of ancient China.
Says Gary Westergren, owner of Oriental Outpost, "I decided to sell Chinese art online because it seems that most people in the world know little about the artistic treasures that are available in China, and even less about the long history of Chinese art whose techniques date back thousands of years."
Gary co-founded Oriental Outpost 14 years ago when he was teaching English in Beijing. He self-describes as "a nerd, web designer, adventurer, TV co-host in China, former Marine, and current U.S Soldier (one weekend per month)."
