Item Description
Belmont, MA, in Pastel.
"Sergi's Farm sits on a piece of land in Belmont that has been in cultivation since 1634, which makes it one of the oldest continually operating farms in the United States. It's also one of the few remaining farms still active inside the Route 128 ring. Joseph Sergi began the farm in 1946. He and his wife, Josephine, had nine sons, and the family worked on the farm for the next 65 years. In 2011, the Sergi family vacated the farm. The land is now cultivated as Belmont Acres Farm, owned by Mike Chase who was an apprentice of Joseph's son, Sal.
I met the Sergi's at the Belmont Farmer's Market. They were selling their vegetables and I was painting the vegetables, fruits, and scenery. The Sergi family was always very friendly and interested in my art. They invited me to come to their farm to paint, so I did just that. On this particular day, the enormous sunflowers caught my attention."
