Saunders won the National Magazine Award for fiction in 1994, 1996, 2000, and 2004. In 2006, he received a MacArthur Fellowship (Genius Award) and the World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story. In 2013, Saunders won the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story. His short-story collection Tenth of December won the 2013 Story Prize for short-story collections, and the inaugural Folio Prize in 2014, and was named one of the "10 Best Books of 2013" by the editors of the New York Times Book Review.
