Item Special Note

Artist Statement:  My work figuratively travels throughout the United States and sometimes the globe in its explorations of rituals and traditions, so I eagerly accepted the opportunity to create a piece for SYTA with the support of Hedy Watson Fine Art.  Designing a single work that would reflect many aspects of youth travel presented a distinct challenge.  The motif of the classical facade handily divided the image, allowing a variety of scenes, while bringing to mind museums, memorials, train stations, and ancient ruins.

I looked to the SYTA Foundation for inspiration for specific scenes, especially the trip to Yosemite, which occupies the central section.  Perusing the foundation’s website stirred memories of my own travels, which infuse the image as well.  For instance, I adore walking through indoor aquariums, watching sea life from floor to ceiling.

I am drawn to cut paper because of its graphic impact, tactile quality, and ability to tell a story with elegant economy.   The paper-cut layer of Step into Wonder is made of a single sheet of paper, following the example of Mexican and Chinese cut paper styles.  I draw the image in reverse, making sure that every shape will be supported by another.  After staining the paper with gouache, I cut the negative spaces with a penknife.  Seeing the image emerge, piece by piece, is incredibly satisfying.
