Hello and thank you for taking a moment to read this.

My name is Kollin Baker and I have been creating ceramics for 27 years in my hometown of Austin Texas.

My signature pieces are what I call Luminaries, which are ceramic cutout candle-holders. The process to create them is this:

• Globes are wheel thrown (sphere/egg shaped but hollow). This shape is super strong...like trying to break an egg in your hand, strong. • They are carefully dried to a leather hard stage (the clay is still wet but stiff enough to handle). •

I use a e-xacto knife and freehand cut these out...NO stencils NO drawing out the pattern. First the lid is cut then filling out the rest of the piece. • These are abstract patterns but I do symmetrical patterns from time to time. •

After they dry, I wipe down carefully to clean the rough corners and boogers away. • I painstakingly glaze the outside, inside, and inside all the cutouts with a brush. • They are fired to 2300 degrees….so they are fire proof. •

Porcelain is the finest ceramic material and most challenging to work with. It has taken me over 20 years of cutting clay to be able to cut out porcelain like these before you.

One observation I have made, candles create the best light BUT also the flame when flickers creates a beautiful movement on the walls and ceiling.
I make pendent light fixtures and lamp-shades, and of course functional pottery as well, such as bowl, plates, and vases.

The absolute best way to “show you” the process is to invite you to my InstaGram page: Kollin_Baker where you can watch me throw and cutout my works.
Thanks so much for this opportunity.
