Item Description
This 8x10 black and white glossy photo of Jean Harlow on the bearskin rug is the classic iconic image by George Hurrell. Embossed with his name, this classic is what many photographers equate to quintessential Hollywood glamour.
It's all about the lighting, and Hurrell was a master at painting or composing with light - rather than blasting with light. A little here, a little there was his signature dramatic lighting. The negative for this photo sold for $57,000 in a 2010 auction by Epstein and Schwimer in Calabasas, California.
The photograph is autographed on the back - although it is smudged.
This famous image of actress Jean Harlow (1911-1937) was shot by George Hurrell on October 18, 1934, at the home Harlow shared with her mother at 214 S. Beverly Glen Boulevard in Beverly Hills. At the time, Hurrell was a resident photographer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He shot this photo for the January 1935 issue of Vanity Fair. For this shoot only contact prints were made, and no enlargements were printed at the time of the negative.
The bear rug photo was Hurrell’s first assignment for Vanity Fair and would become his most important Hollywood portrait. Other actresses would request a bearskin rug at their photo shoots, so Hurrell had to go out and purchase one.
