Item Description
The shark, for the author, became a symbol of everything that is mysterious and fierce about the sea.
No book he ever found satisfied his yearning for more knowledge about these creatures, so he began gathering material for a book of his own.
His research went on for years. He corresponded with experts around the world. He studied sharks first-hand, swimming among them.
One September morning he sailed from the Santa Monica pier in his 11 foot dinghy. He did not come home that night. The Coast Guard began a search the next morning. Finally a fishing boat found his dinghy awash 5 miles offshore. One oar and the tiller were missing, and so was Webster.
