Nelson Mandela, a leader of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, spent 27 years in prison.

He continued to direct a campaign of peaceful, nonviolent defiance against the South African government and its racist policies until 1993 when he was released from prison by South African president F.W. de Klerck.

Following South Africa’s general election on April 27, 1994,  Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first black president on May 10, 1994.

A symbol of global peacemaking, Nelson Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
