Item Description
Shanghai Children's Medical Center (SCMC) is affiliated with Shanghai Jiatong University School of Medicine and is located on Dongfang Road, Shanghai Pudong New Area in China. The facility is a tertiary pediatric hospital which fully integrates clinical care, scientific research and education. SCMC covers an area of 17 acres, and the hospital has a capacity of 500 inpatient beds. Today it is recognized within China and internationally for neonatology care, rare disease research, and surgical services, and operates one of the world's largest congenital heart surgery programs. Today, in addition to its extensive services in all areas of pediatrics, SCMC conducta more than 3,500 heart surgeries each year!
SCMC was founded in 1998 as a result of a collaboration between the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the US based Project HOPE. In May 2008, I had the honor of participating in a U.S. delegation to China, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the institution. During our visit, we atended their third annual art contest where children who were patients at the hospital presented their artwork. Each original painting depicted an experience the child had during their stay at SCMC, and all were extremely impressive.
The "A Birthday Party in the Ward" - an example of the wonderful art work shown during the event - is the work of a 15-year old young woman named Li Jun.
