The Algae Academy is the newest initiative of the Alge Foundation. It's purpose is to educate and excite students on the power of algae as a sustainable solution for several of the dilemmas facing our global community. Algae production will significantly reduce greenhouse gases, provide a sustainable source of biomass for food, and ultimately lead the path to homegrown commercial biofuels. Through algal education students learn practical applications of farming to produce a sustainable resource for human consumption.
Algae Academy kits include age specific curriculum with different objectives for elementary, middle, and high school classes. The goal for elementary education is to introduce students to algae as an organism and excite them on the interesting ways they interact with algae on a daily basis. For middle and high school students, the goal is to utilize algae as a tool to effectively meet the four disciplines of STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics – in an interdisciplinary and applied approach through real-world applications. Students develop experiments, analyze data, measure growth, and make connections on how algae production has a positive impact on the global environment. Students learn about the essential need for sustainable resources, current concerns about future protein shortages, and how algae can be a game-changing resource in developing countries.
Algae STEM kits are distributed free of charge to schools across the nation. The foundation will distribute 100 new kits in 2018 with instructional supplements and online training resources for teachers.
The curriculum fulfills the human impact education component in the Next Generation Science Standards that requires students be able to apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment. Algae production is an ideal example of how we as a population can minimize human impacts on water usage, land utilization, and pollution. New educational standards have increased the demand on educators to design innovative lessons and methods of teaching. The Foundation is committed to partnering with teachers and developing science kits that meet these new education standards in an exciting and innovative way to inspire students and their families, as well as teachers and their teams.
