Bio on Steve Abrams:
My name is Steve Abrams. I teach piano and flute. I’ve been teaching since I graduated from UCLA, where I received my BA degree in music. I work with students of all ages and all levels. I’m a professional jazz musician, and enjoy having students and their families come to hear my groups. I often invite students who are learning jazz to sit in with us. These have always been special experiences for all of us. My jazz groups have performed at many venues, including the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and the San Jose International Jazz Festival. My New Zealand group, Pleasure Point, has performed at the Nelson International Jazz Festival, the Tauranga National Jazz Festival, the Manawatu Jazz Festival and the Wellington International Jazz Festival. For 15 years, I was musical director and accompanist for Mountain Community Theater and Little People’s Repertory Theater in Ben Lomond. The main thing I want from my students is for them to have a joyful experience learning and playing music, have an art form that allows them a means of personal expression, and to experience pride in their accomplishments. The styles I teach are classical, jazz, Latin jazz, salsa, blues, boogie woogie, ragtime, Broadway show tunes, and current popular music. I encourage parents to be involved in their childrens’ musical education.
