As Above, So Below is an original painting by Darcy Gerdes that pushes the boundaries of Realism and Fantasy into Surrealism. Influenced by the art of tree-shaping that started in 1914, Darcy’s brush strokes and warm color pallet produce a harmonic composition that feeds on the imagination.
Similar to the branches of young trees that are manipulated into chairs, there is an organic quality to her painting. Akin to trees fed by water and light, Darcy’s subject matter is fed by the world around her.
Prevalent in many of her fantasy paintings, the moon symbolizes the effect the environment has on humans and vice-versa. Like the tree branches and roots, both the painting’s title and essence cultivate the fundamental teaching that “We are all one.”
Although the process of growing chairs takes 5-10 years, achieving balance takes a lifetime. Quoting Leonardo da Vinci, the artist’s message is “Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else."
ARTIST BIO:
Darcy Gerdes is a self-taught artist that grew up in the shadows of Disneyland. She has built a thriving career from her artistic passion, which started at the age of 5 where she could be found selling caricatures for a nickel each. Armed with an unlimited source of inspiration, which included working as an illustrator for 15 years, Darcy doesn’t have one favorite subject to paint, as she believes that each idea or concept seems to want a life of their own. Encouraged by a high school teacher and inspired by a neighbor who was an accomplished animator, Darcy is known for her amazing eye for detail and innate talent. An award-winning artist in many mediums, Darcy now favors watercolors, acrylics, and color pencil.
