Item Description
11” X 7” - Drypoint Print
Cage is a drypoint print, which is similar to engraving, that was created by HaoTian. It explores the internal conflict between political dominance and cultural freedom within nations. In many countries, especially the nation where the artist is from, the chair represents authority.
In China, the one person who holds the absolute political dominance is referred to as “Chairman”. Seen from past evidences in China, as explained by HaoTian, people in power thought that the commoner’s belief in traditional cultural were obstacles to their political dominance. Thus, they did all they could to oppress it. The traditional values and customs were forbidden and people were punished for following them.
Nowadays, censorship, imprisonment and persecution are still enforced on people because of their beliefs. Governments try to put layers of cages on cultures that threaten their absolute dominance. However, it’s the artists belief that culture and traditions are far more lasting than governmental control. They are what’s forming the core of society and the effort to abolish it is pathetic and useless.
ARTIST BIO:
HaoTian is a senior at Idyllwild Arts Academy who at a young age became fascinated by the idea of a higher being watching over and guiding us. Believing that the transcendental experience is one of the most significant sources for developing imagination, a lot of HaoTian’s artwork is based on religious stories or elements. Portraying the world in a creative way, HaoTian thinks artists exist because there are things that can’t be communicated with words or text and that through observation art should deliver the hidden message. Through his art practices, he hopes to transfer his opinions and observances of the world to audiences.
