Item Description

19” x 41” - Encaustic Wax

Robert’s Chair is one of ten chairs in a series created by Charlie Ciali.  The series captures the unique personality of chairs owned by family or friends of the artist.  Robert’s Chair, which was inspired by a chair owned by Charlie’s friend, is an encaustic painting which is built upon several layers of encaustic wax.

Encaustic painting is one of the oldest forms of art, dating back to the Romans and Egyptians who layered wax to create a flesh-like mask painted on wood and placed over the face of a mummy.  Known for stretching the boundaries, Charlie’s technique of using torch blowers and water makes his encaustic paintings extremely challenging and collectible.

Charlie, a printmaker, gravitates to encaustic painting because of its transparent texture and varying degrees of depth that simulate alabaster.  Unlike other mediums, encaustic absorbs versus reflects light, which is evident when seeing this painting live.
