Item Description
What began as a grassroots effort over lunch at a local restaurant has blossomed into a lively chamber orchestra beloved by the community. In 2013, Mercury rebranded and expanded its repertoire to include works outside of the Baroque period. In this evolution, the goal remains the same—bringing music to life and to people across Houston and beyond.
Mercury continues to receive critical and audience acclaim for innovative and welcoming performances, while also impacting the lives of young Houstonians through award-winning music education programs.
This Eight(8) CD set brings you the best of Mercury.
- L'estro Armonico (2010): Highly acclaimed by critics from around the world, Mercury’s recording features Vivaldi’s dazzling set of concerti for one, two or four violin soloists. Mercury recorded these epic Violin Concertos by Vivaldi in March 2010, with soloists Jonathan Godfrey, Oleg Sulyga, Noel Martin and Hae-a Lee on violin and Barrett Sills on cello.
- F. Handel: Concerti Grossi, Op. 6 (2009): Mercury’s strings, the core of the ensemble, show their virtuosity and musicality in six of the twelve concerti from Handel’s Opus 6. This recording features Mercury’s own Jonathan Godfrey and Oleg Sulyga, violins, and Barrett Sills, cello.
- Sammartini, Locatelli, Torelli, & Corelli: Christmas Concertos (2015): Performed on period instruments, Mercury presents an approachable, fresh and energetic take on these magnificent Christmas Concertos by Baroque masters.
- Vivaldi & Piazzolla: 8 Seasons (2004): Recorded live in 2003, this riveting album pairs Vivaldi’s well-known Four Seasons with the Four Seasons of 20th-century Argentinean tango composer Astor Piazzolla. Features Antoine Plante on bandoneon and Jonathan Godfrey on violin.
- Mozart: A Little Night Music (2012): One of Mozart’s most lauded works and a perennial audience favorite, Eine kleine Nachtmusik, is featured on this album of Mozart divertimenti and serenades.
- Rameau: Suite Les Indes Galantes (2011): A dramatic orchestral suite from the opéra-ballet by the French composer and theorist Rameau, vividly brought to life by the energetic Mercury musicians.
- Schubert & Mendelssohn: Death and the Maiden (2014): Mercury’s first Romantic recording features one of the best-loved string quartets, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, as arranged for strings by Gustav Mahler, alongside Mendelssohn's nimble and delightful Third Quartet.
- Handel: Acis & Galatea (2008): One of Handel’s highest regarded operas, this period-performance recording features Ana Treviño-Godfrey as Galatea, Karim Sulayman as Acis and Sam Handley as Polypheme.
