Item Description

30' x 50” - Graphite on Paper

The Human Chair is an original graphite on paper drawing by Xibeiwa (Alex).  This drawing was inspired by a short story written by Edogawa Ranpo, The Human Chair.

In the story, a craftsman who is skilled at making chairs hides himself inside his chair. The craftsman started to gain pleasure from having strangers sitting on him because his senses and imagination became exaggerated when he felt the layers of bodies.

Alex portrayed the feeling from within the chair and put herself in the position of the craftsman in this piece, while the sectarianism behind this drawing manifests only when the drawing is sold.

“It may seem strange, but I speak nothing but the truth when I say that, although all people may seem alike, there are countless distinguishing traits among all men which can be “seen” merely by the feel of their bodies. In fact, there are just as many differences as in the case of fingerprints or facial contours.” (Edogawa Ranpo, The Human Chair).

ARTIST BIO:

Xibeiwa (Alex) is an art student currently studying at Idyllwild Arts Academy with focus on drawing and the use of different media.  During the art making process, Alex likes to connect her art with issues and topics that she thinks are necessities in a way that brings out people’s critical thinking.  During the process of creating, it is Alex’s nature to draw and think about the meaning of her work.  Alex enjoys working on events such as Chairs for Charity because it allows her to experience different ways of approaching art making and the meaning behind it.
