Item Description

8” x 18” - Porcelain

Untitled Squirrel #9 - This piece is a small reflection of nature, seen through a more vernacular glance.  It contains all those small inclusions of ourselves that become visual garbage, the scribbles that we stop seeing after a time. The squirrel is a referent to place, Idyllwild, while the piece itself is a sort of reimagining of an obscenely banal and kitsch art object that exists because some individual made a plaster mold once of some bad lawn art.

The artist, Daniel Donovan, loves the importance Asger Jorn places on the Necessity of banal art to the greater art world, as written about in his essay “Intimate Banalities”. He places great importance in the existence of both good and bad art.

This piece is in conversation with those ideas, recontextualizing what the artist sees as shallow Quiet place holders in the world of craft into something different. A love for graffiti, ceramic, drawing and for the work of the late ceramic artist Kirk Mangus comes through in this small statue.

ARTIST BIO:

Daniel Donovan is the head of the sculpture department at Idyllwild Arts Academy.  Being a combat veteran, as well as having an unhealthy obsession with existential philosophy and science fiction, his experience opened his eyes to how truly brief and absurd our lives are; every one of them a furious reinvention of the wheel.  Daniel believes that humans are fascinated with who we are, where we are going and what is waiting for us – leading us to create thousands of alternative futures and endings of ourselves.  Through the stories and our imagination, we can exist in our own brief imitation of immortality.  Daniel works to give these concepts form and to translate our absurdity into something with purpose, however brief that purpose may be.
