Item Description

21”w x 42”h x 18”d, Approx. 60 lbs - Cedar/Redshank/Turquoise

Trilogy of 1909 is an original chair created by Mark Willden.  His organic design includes a 109-year old slab of Cedar from the mountain community of Idyllwild that is perched upon a rare three-legged Redshank truck.

Nicknamed ribbon wood because of its characteristic red color and peeling bark, redshank bark has been used to create clothing and for medicinal purposes.  Respecting the spirit of the wood, Mark begins by sanding each piece by hand and then inlaying crushed turquoise from Kingman, Arizona into the natural cracks of the wood.

Built to be ergonomic, the chair’s design also stays true to Mark’s artistic roots.  This includes green patinaed copper supports and pipes that complement the overall aesthetic.  In addition to being visually appealing, the chair also swivels.

Trilogy of 1909 is the first chair created by Mark.  His design marries three primary elements and took over 60 hours to create.   It cannot be recreated by him nor by nature.

ARTIST BIO:

Mark Willden started his artistic endeavor carving soap stone and pipe stone in the 70’s.  In 2015, after 40 years as a finished carpenter, Mark started creating tables and stools out of repurposed wine barrels.  He also become intrigued with burl wood from redshank and manzanita roots that were found in the San Jacinto Mountains.  After hand-sanding, Mark painstakingly inlays turquoise, lapis, and malachite in the natural cracks of the wood.  In the end, with many pieces resembling animals, Marks goal is to bring out the character of each piece while leaving as much of the natural beauty of the wood in place.
