24” x 30” - Acrylic on Canvas
In the Studio is an acrylic painting by Rachel Welch, a Visual Arts Teacher at Idyllwild Arts Academy, that invites onlookers into her student’s studio. The fluidity of her brushstrokes, harmonic paint values, and composition reflect a space that feeds imagination and invites you to experience the pulse of the Academy.
This expressive still life awakens the curiosity and allows art lovers to fill in the blanks. It captures a moment in time that is both static and in motion.
Hidden in the shadows of the shelves is the remains of an antique chair, the original chair design that was ultimately abandoned. Rachel not only painted over the original painting, she started by turning the canvas upside down! Gravity took hold of the paint drips, a process the artist had never tried, which kindled the new painting.
The cool and warm color pallet of this painting were mixed by hand using primary colors, white, and grey. Rachel believes this process creates more freedom which is evident in this painting.
