Item Description
30.5”w x 41.25”h x 35.5”d - Acrylic on custom rocker
Powerful In Vulnerability is a custom-made Adirondack rocking chair built by Thom Wallace that was gifted to Erin R.M. Dutton. As an accomplished watercolor artist, her free-flowing technique is unmistakable even when applying acrylic paint.
The voids created by the chair slats challenged Erin to select a scene that would translate without missing any key design elements. Referring to animal totem books, while remaining true to her watercolor roots, gave birth to a wolf peering at its own reflection.
Erin’s uncanny ability to balance shadow and light offers onlookers a glimpse into a fantasy world where strength and vulnerability are akin. The calming change of blue hues and hidden star effects are created by five colors of acrylic spray paint. The visual journey includes Erin’s fascination of butterflies, which were a design element in her own wedding, with one resting on the armchair.
A functional piece of art, the subtle yet all-encompassing setting allows imagination to wonder in search of meaning from within. Painted poplar wood rocker has been coated with outdoor protective varnish.
ARTIST BIO:
Erin R.M. Dutton grew up in Yokohama Japan and Idyllwild. Japan gave her the esthetics and appreciation for beauty. Idyllwild gave her appreciation of the forest and community. Erin started drawing as a child and sharpened her skills while attending the Arts Academy of San Francisco. A watercolor and acrylic artist, Erin feels that paint sometimes has a mind and presence of its own. Erin loves the process of creating and aims to paint to the rhythm, movement and creative love in her heart. When not creating, Erin is constantly thinking of the action of painting. Her goal is to create art that touches the heart and is more than just an image.
