Item Description
24"w x 50"h x 20"d - Copper Wire & Pal Tiya Clay
Awaiting is an invitation by artist Charlotte Horton to explore myths and legends of the forest. The remarkable attention to detail of this 50” chair is reminiscent of a classic fairytale waiting to be explored.
Inspired by a lively discussion with a friend who owned a toddler chair, Charlotte’s imagination was unleashed, creating a chair both functional and fanciful. Taking over three months to create, she faced many firsts such as using Pal Tiya clay and making a 10” model for testing. The final piece was created around a tinfoil and cardboard armature. The clay, known for its exceptional strength once cured, was then painted to look like a stump with mushroom tables growing from the forest floor.
An accomplished wire artist, Charlotte’s piece wouldn’t be complete without one of her signature trees. Unique to this design is the hand-created lacy canopy growing from and rooted in the tree stump.
Awaiting, like a real forest, will continue to weather and change over time.
ARTIST BIO:
Charlotte Horton has always wanted to be an artist, but never reached the level she felt was art until she picked up copper wire. At that point, something indefinable happened and her art grew out of it. Combining different elements, Charlotte creates her version of nature, which happens to also be her biggest inspiration. Charlotte loves trees with their roots reaching deep into the earth anchoring them securely as their branches reach for the heavens. She strives to recreate their strength and beauty in her work. For Charlotte, the structure and strength of trees is an echo of the longing we all have to be connected to the past, present, and future.
