Item Description

Edge on Science offers summer youth programs in applied science and engineering It offers an array of week-long, day programs that engage your children with fun, hands-on, team building projects.   The camps take place at Regis College in Weston for kids 8-14 years old.  For more info see camp website at www.edgeonscience.com. Summer offerings for 2018 include:

Summer Rocket Blast Off - Each child designs, builds, tests and flies his or her own rocket. Rocket designs must be approved by the lead instructor. Your child uses rocket design simulation software to test different designs, motors and flight conditions. This design software is the real deal, used by professional engineers to design rockets for scientific research. The only difference is that it has been configured for use by young people.

Bridge Building - Using engineering principals, each child engineers, builds and load tests an efficient, balsa wood and/or basswood model bridge that satisfies certain design criteria. Starting with a simple beam your child is introduced to engineering basics.

Hydraulics Makerspace - Your child learns about simple machines and how a hydraulic system can be used to transmit power to move parts of a machine. Then she or he gets to experiment with the makerspace build components to see how they connect and work together. Everyone has a build buddy. The real fun begins when engineering objectives are given and everyone gets to design and build their own machine. What’s an objective? It might be something like, “Design and build a hydraulic machine to lift a model spaceship onto its launch pad.”

Galileo's Astronomy -Go back in time to the renaissance and get to know Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), considered by many to be the father of experimental science. It was common for truths to be simply declared without testing or experimentation. Galileo sought to change that.

Catapult Engineering - The kids are grouped into teams to build a trebuchet. Catapult Engineering is non-stop, hands-on physics fun with a medieval flair. The kids got to work on their building, teamwork and critical thinking skills without even realizing it.

Drone & Code - Assemble a drone and its hand controller. Learn the basics of flight and then take it to the next level by coding flight instructions. Come up with flight plans and compete with other teams.

Amazing Bugs - Your child will marvel at the diversity of insect and bug types. Field exploration and a wide assortment of activities will reveal their super powers.

Let's Experiment - Children get to explore many branches of applied science and engineering through fun experimentation, demonstrations, games and challenges.
