Item Description
You and a guest will enjoy an evening of Jazz at the cd release concert of Grammy nominated Cuban composer and jazz pianist Manuel Valera (and fellow PS75 parent) at the Jazz Standard.
The Manuel Valera Trio performs another classically–inspired project entitled The Planets, commissioned by Chamber Music America and inspired by English composer Gustav Holst’s early 20th century masterwork of the same name.
“He’s destined to play a role in the future of jazz." —Philip van Vleck, Billboard
“Post–bop and classical romanticism are as integral to his vocabulary as Latin folk forms, and they all find natural ex¬pression in his music.” (The New York Times)
"Valera shows a keen jazz vocabulary, a gift for creating grooves that invite stellar solo flights from his collaborators and the nerve to romance a melody when it suits him." (Billboard)
A native of Havana and a New York resident since 2000, the GRAMMY–nominated pianist has lent his prodigious talents to the music of such Latin–jazz notables as Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Brian Lynch, Dafnis Prieto, Yosvany Terry and Joshua Bell.
As a bandleader and composer, Valera has proven to be an expert at blending high concept and visceral groove: His 2017 album The Seasons was an ambitious suite inspired by Antonio Vivaldi’s famous concerto “The Four Seasons.”
