Item Description
This door was William Humphrey's door. He was the former director of the Charleston Development Board and served as a port inspector for the Coast Guard in WW2. This door was in his office in the old Citadel on Marion Square during the war. The door has been cut down to fit a standard door frame.
It's construction of heart pine and the hardware are inline the doors from 1842. Door also has ghost images of the 19th century hinges and the construction method employed. The door was originally painted Charleston green on the exterior and Spanish red on the interior. While there are explanations of the use of red in military applications, the more likely reason for the use of Spanish red during the antebellum period is that it was cheap and widely available.
