The National Ballet of Canada returns to the Bay Area for the first time in a decade with Nijinsky, John Neumeier’s imaginative tribute to the legendary dancer-choreographer. In this kaleidoscopic biography, pivotal moments surface through the lens of Nijinsky’s psychosis, illuminated by the iconic characters he danced.
Vaslav Nijinsky was born before the Bolshevik Revolution when Russia was still a czarist empire. He was one of the first male dancers who could successfully dance en pointe and his seemingly effortless leaps earned him a worldwide reputation as the greatest male dancer of the early 20th century. He was an artist who streaked across Europe like a comet and spent the last three decades of his existence in a mental institution.
This ballet is a triumph of dramatic intensity with the music of Frédéric Chopin, Robert Schumann, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Dmitri Shostakovich. The National Ballet rises to the challenge of presenting John Neumeier's Nijinsky, a spectacular, sprawling, surreal and often mind-bending homage to ballet's most legendary male dancer.
Grab 3 of your fiends and head to the city for a great afternoon. We have included for you in this lot a gift certificate for dining at Absinthe Brasserie & Bar, perfect for brunch before the ballet, or a meal afterwards. Located within walking distance of Civic Center and all the performing arts centers, Absinthe is a favorite.
