Fine Functional Furniture

FN = Fine Art x Function
What is the most we can make with the least?  We strive to make the most elegant, useful, simple, affordable, sturdy and comfortable furniture from the most sound and common materials with the least waste of resources and energy.  The Function (Fn) of our products is key.
Fn Furniture was established in September 2017 to produce and distribute 99% furniture.

99% Furniture
The 99% Project seeks to use 99% of a standard sheet of plywood to make furniture, so the parts nest together like a puzzle.  A layout drawing may be found on each product page.  The project was inspired by the ingenuity, resourcefulness and values of the Occupy Movement.

Fit and Finesse.
Our seating is designed to support bottoms and backs in healthy alignment. Not the strict verticality of meditation, but the curves of good, comfortable posture. The designs are guided by yogic principles.  The angles, surfaces and spaces of the furniture encourage comfort, healthy alignment, and energetic flow.

Our M+M (Methods and Materials)
We strive for the least waste, the soundest materials, the simplest production, and the most direct delivery.

CNC
Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) router tables are becoming common in cabinet shops worldwide.  Mostly, the shops use them to make quick, rectangular cabinet parts.  For us, the shops make the exacting parts and joints of our furniture.  The speed and accuracy enable efficient, cost-effective production.
We are developing a network of small fabrication shops nationwide, to eliminate warehousing, shipping and packaging and to fuel personal, local production by small businesses.  Instead of boxes and crates, bubble and peanuts, we send digital files and guidance.

Plywood
Plywood is made from thin pieces of all cuts of a tree.  It uses less glue than other composites and feels better.  It is more stable than regular wood because the grains are crossed and glued to reinforce one another.
We use a multi-layered Baltic Birch Plywood. It passes CARB II emission standards for Formaldehyde (California 93120 Phase 2 compliant for formaldehyde), the strictest emission standard to date.

Shellac
Shellac has been widely used since the 1600’s. It is made from the resin of the lac beetle, thinned with alcohol.  It is a natural, non-toxic product often used to add a polish to apples.  We don’t recommend eating it, though.  And it does take some care.  Hard alcohol will remove it, so spills should be cleaned right away.  It is easily repaired by light sanding, then applying more shellac.  Any finish or paint can be applied over the de-waxed shellac we use, after a light sanding.

Ken Landauer
Ken Landauer founded Fn Furniture. 30 years of art and woodwork led here. He created, tested, refined, built, and finished the first hundred pieces. Then he swept the shop. Now, he designs and develops each piece, from the cutting table to your living room.
