Item Description
Tiny House, Huge Heart
"It would be really neat if more people sought to have smaller spaces, because it would free them up for a larger life."
Home is where your heart is – and this is a home with heart.
The Calistoga Junior/Senior High School Wood Shop Department lead by Mr. Eric Parry built a home with a heart. It was a project supported by our school and community: many local businesses and professional craftsmen helped with supplies, time, materials and consultation. The founders of the tiny house movement, Tumbleweed Tiny House Company, donated the plans. The students invested over 400 hours of time, or 2.5 school years, and soon, the Tiny House was born.
It was a fabulous experience for the students: it taught them skills, teamwork, project management and pride of execution.
The Tiny House is perfect as a guest cottage, a studio or office, an in-law unit or a minimalist approach to life. It is 117 sq. ft on the main floor with extra square footage for a sleeping loft above.
Beautifully constructed, it has a custom walnut counter top and custom stained glass windows in the front door and in the sleeping loft. The interior was painstakingly crafted from knotty pine tongue and groove boards. Two small heaters and a ceiling fan provide year-round comfort. And yes, those are wine barrel staves for the front porch rails. Only in Napa!
The Tiny House also has a 30 amp electrical connection. There is a fresh water connection, shower, small kitchen sink and RV style toilet. There is a small 2-burner propane stove, and an on-demand hot water tap. The waste drainage system is stubbed out so that it could be connected to a septic line, sewer, or holding tank.
Age and changing demographics have led many of us to reevaluate what we want in a home. More and more, folks are looking for homes within walking distance of jobs, stores, and transit — trading square footage for a vibrant neighborhood. Many increasingly look for alternatives to the car; baby boomers have reached the age where they don’t need a big home in the ‘burbs; and more and more families are choosing to live in multi-generational households.
Tiny houses are a great solution for all these needs. So whether you wish to be free from rent or a mortgage or you want a mother in law or guest suite, a tiny home might just be for you.
