TRIO alumni are in careers of education, law, medicine, sports, and entertainment. This special movie package features acclaimed films by three TRIO alumni: Angela Bassett, Viola Davis, and yes, Patrick Ewing.
Award winning actress and TRIO Upward Bound alumnus, Angela Bassett stars in AKEELAH AND THE BEE. The inspirational story of Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer), an eleven-year-old girl from south Los Angeles with a gift for words. Despite the objections of her mother Tanya (Angela Bassett), Akeelah enters various spelling contests, for which she is tutored by the forthright Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne); her principal Mr. Welch (Curtis Armstrong) and the proud residents of her neighborhood. Akeelah's aptitude earns her an opportunity to compete for a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and, in turn, unites her neighborhood who witness the courage and inspiration of one amazing little girl.
Starring award winning actress Viola Davis, The Help is the story of an aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s who decides to write a book detailing the African American maids' point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis. Viola Davis is an alumnus of Rhode Island College TRIO Upward Bound.
Before he was an NBA Hall-of-Famer and the current Georgetown University baskeball coach, Patrick Ewing starred in Space Jam. In a desperate attempt to win a basketball match and earn their freedom, the Looney Tunes seek the aid of retired basketball champion, Michael Jordan. Patrick Ewing was a participant in the MIT/Wellesley TRIO Upward Bound program. There is also a brief appearance by former NBA player and TRIO SSS alumnus A.C. Green.
