Item Description
Join textile artist, Jodi Stevens, for a two-day workshop for up to three people! Each day will be 5-6 hours long, and the workshop will be given over two back to back weekends (such as two Sundays) or over a two-day weekend (Saturday & Sunday). Dates, times, and location will be determined with instructor and prize winner. Participants will create silk scarves and/or other dyed items over the two-day period. The usual cost of this workshop is $200-$250 per person, plus lab fees.
Shibori, an ancient Japanese textile tradition dating back to the 8th Century, is a process of dyeing cloth through stitching, binding, folding, twisting and clamping, thus creating unique patterns and texture. In this workshop students are first introduced to the many variations within the technique, including Kanoko, Arashi, Makume, Nui, and Itajime, by first making small samples to grasp the basics. These can then be used for reference when making larger pieces. This is followed by stitching cotton and silk scarves and submerging them in dye baths. Procion fiber reactive dyes are used – learning how to safely work with the dyes is an integral aspect of the process. In the end, students open and unbind their stitched
scarves to see the beautiful, unique patterns created by this versatile technique, which canbe practiced at home.
