Item Description
Watercolorist Robert Johansen was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1923. He lives with his wife in Racine and has six children.
Johansen has received numerous prizes throughout his career and is represented in many private and public collections.
In the book "40 watercolorists and How They Work" by Susan Meyer, Johansen discusses his art. "Watercolor is my means of communication to others. My subjects are usually local and intimately known to me. They record my nostalgia for the past and my basic belief that nature is man's truest source of peace. My personal expression of the everyday, the commonplace, will hopefully create a new awareness in the viewers: a new appreciation for the essential beauty of simplicity."
These pieces were gifted to the RSO when our staff moved into offices in the City Hall Annex.
Johansen passed away in 1991 but his work remains well-known and sought after.
Item Special Note
