Item Description

Once upon a time there was a great Earthquake in San Francisco! The ground shook SO HARD that all the city’s famous landmarks fell into the sea. It was up to Ms. Kim’s brave first grade class to collect the landmarks and put them back in their places!

This was the challenge we presented to Ms. Kim’s class for this year’s art project. Each student was given a wooden cut out of a famous city landmark. First job, re-decorate them! After all, their colors had been washed away by the ocean! The children were given paint and glitter and a few other embellishments to use (and a photo of what the landmark used to look like as a general guide).

After they had restored each landmark to its former, or in some cases even more fabulous present glory it was time to replace the landmarks around the city. But where do they go? We opted not to tell the children where each landmark had previously lived, but instead allowed them to ask questions and help each other out. We were happy to provide some general hints What is a bridge’s job? Have you been on a cable car? What did you see? Things like that. We weren’t sure what our new city would look like in the end, but we were happy knowing that all our famous landmarks would be returned home...well...close enough.

We were really impressed with the children’s knowledge of San Francisco. They knew the names of most of the landmarks and were extremely good at working out their location as a group. Not only was their artwork extremely impressive but their geography skills were too. Our new San Francisco looks incredibly close to our pre-quake town. We had such a pleasure working with the class on this project! Hope you enjoy it!

Materials used: wood, acrylic paints (with a few embellishments) and time!
