Item Description
This collection of four wines are some of the finest, but least known Italian wines.
Parusso Barolo Argento Riserva 2005, Monforte d’Alba, Piedmont
Vinous 92+:
The 2005 Barolo Riserva is a gorgeous wine endowed with considerable textural depth. Layers of finessed red fruit, smoke, earthiness, sweet herbs and tobacco are some of the notes that emerge from the glass. The 2005 Riserva possesses tons of depth and richness. It will be interesting to see the direction the wine takes over the coming years. Bright red fruit, flowers mint and licorice add brightness on the finish. Drink 2015-2025.
Piaggia Carmignano Riserva 2001, Carmignano, Tuscany
Wine Advocate 95:
The 2001 Carmignano Riserva (70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot) is simply a mouthful of unflagging gratification, perfectly focused and potent in its expression of berry fruit, vanilla, cedar, and cloves, deep and enveloping in flavor, lusciously ripe and velvety from the attack to the exceptionally long finish, the classic iron fist in a velvet glove. Drink: 2006-2022.
Podere San Luigi Fidenzio 2005, Toscana
Wine Advocate 94:
The 2005 Fidenzio is awesome. This deeply-colored, intense wine emerges from the glass with an enticing array of black cherries, plums, cassis, minerals, herbs and tar. The wine possesses incredible energy and vibrancy that builds on the palate, culminating with powerful yet round tannins on the finish. The wine’s richness, density and sheer balance are remarkable, especially within the context of this vintage. Ultimately, the 2005 is a Fidenzio that is best suited for the dinner table. The 2005 doesn’t have the sheer juiciness of the 2006 but rather relies on a classic Medoc-like sense of structure to make its case, which it does rather eloquently. Fidenzio is Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Sadly, the wine is very difficult to find in the US, but hopefully readers in other countries will enjoy better access to this unique Tuscan red. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.
San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino 2005, Brunello di Montalcino
Wine Advocate 90:
The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is a very pretty wine that impresses for its soft-textured, generous fruit and beautiful persistence on the palate. Silky tannins frame the long close, where scents of smoke and licorice add complexity to a final burst of red fruit. This accessible Brunello is best enjoyed while the fruit remains fresh. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.
