Item Description

Don't miss this exciting opportunity! Bid today for one certificate, entitling you to a "Historian's Tour of the United States Capitol." Bring your party of up to 10 visitors for a walk through the Capitol building with U.S. Capitol Historical Society historian Steve Livengood or another Society guide, who will provide anecdotes and commentary about the construction of the building, discuss the history and function of Congress, and add perspective about the meaning of the democratic form of government.

The tour explains why it took nearly 40 years to build the original Capitol building, why and how it has been enlarged almost continually, famous incidents, and crucial events that have taken place inside, the scope and purpose of the new Visitor Center, the daily activities that occur in and around the building, and the history and purpose of the buildings that make up the Capitol complex. If possible, your group may also visit the Chambers of the House and/or Senate!

Item Special Note

Please note that this tour is best taken during the Summer and Winter months when the Capitol is not full of visitors. Spring and Fall are the busy times: the building is crowded and the Historical Society staff is not always available for this purpose. The Capitol is closed Sundays; the tour can be taken Saturday if a Society guide is available. The tours usually begin at 10:00am or 2:00pm; the Capitol opens at 8:30am and closes at 4:30pm.

Date and time will be coordinated between winner and Lauren following the auction.
