Taiko, literally “big drum,” has been a longtime staple at Japanese festivals and temples. Modern group taiko drumming originated with jazz drummer Daihachi Oguchi in the 1950s, who created drum ensembles that include drums ranging in from snare-drum-sized “shime” to the armchair-sized “odaiko.”
